Russia's Lavrov regrets Armenia's 'last-minute' backout of trilateral meeting
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed regret over Armenia’s decision to cancel its participation in a trilateral meeting of the Armenian, Russian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers scheduled to be held in Moscow, RIA Novosti reported.
"We agreed to host a meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers here to continue discussions on a peace treaty. We were preparing for this event, but, unfortunately, our Armenian colleagues refused to come to Moscow at the last moment, citing the situation on the ground," Lavrov told a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov in Moscow on Friday.
“It is a pity that such an opportunity was missed,” he added.
Earlier, the Armenian Foreign Ministry attributed the decision to cancel FM Ararat Mirzoyan’s participation in the meeting to the ongoing Azerbaijani blockade of the Lachin corridor, the sole road connecting Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to Armenia.
