Macron urges Aliyev to ensure free movement through Lachin corridor
French President Emmanuel Macron called on his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev to secure free movement along the Lachin corridor, the sole road connecting Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to Armenia blocked by Azerbaijan since December 12.
In a phone call on Friday, Macron conveyed to Aliyev his "deep concerns" over the escalation of tensions in the South Caucasus and urged Baku to respect the ceasefire agreement signed in 2020, the Elysee Palace said in a statement.
“He called for compliance with the November 9, 2020 ceasefire agreement and free movement through the Lachin Corridor," the statement said.
Macron also urged Aliyev to ensure "unimpeded" access of humanitarian organizations to the affected people.
"The two presidents agreed to continue, in collaboration with the parties concerned, negotiations to find a lasting political solution in the region," the Elysee Palace said.
