MP: Azerbaijan's long-term goals include gaining full control over Armenia
Azerbaijan is preparing the ground for renewed military aggression against Armenia, MP Tigran Abrahamyan of the opposition Pativ Unem faction claims, referring to Azeri President Ilham Aliyev’s latest statements.
Aliyev laid claims to the territory of modern-day Armenia, referring to it as “Western Azerbaijan” in his speech to the Community of West Azerbaijanis on his 61st birthday on Saturday.
“Western Azerbaijan is our historical land, this is confirmed by many historical documents, historical maps, and our history,” he said
"While the Armenian authorities announce their readiness to start a process of unblocking regional communications and delimiting/demarcating its borders with Azerbaijan, the “Western Azerbaijan" scheme is becoming institutionalized at the Azerbaijani president’s initiative,” Abrahamyan wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
“What does this mean? Azerbaijan claims that modern-day Armenia is Azerbaijani land, while Armenians live on it and have established statehood by virtue of "historical injustice".
“This new process must not be confused with previous Azerbaijani statements that, for example, Yerevan or Lake Sevan “are historical Azerbaijani lands.” Azerbaijan is turning its territorial claims against Armenia, which are part of its propaganda campaign, into preparation for aggression against Armenia.
“In other words, Azerbaijan’s long-term goals include gaining full control over Armenia, with political, legal, historical and military grounds being prepared for it,” the deputy stated.
