Two deaths from swine flu recorded in Armenia
Two people have died from H1N1 flu, a subtype of influenza A commonly known as swine flu, Romella Abovyan, Head of the Department for Epidemiology of Noncommunicable Diseases and Nosocomial Infections at the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told a news conference on Wednesday.
She said unlike many European countries hit by H3N2 strain, swine flu is more circulated in Russia and Armenia currently. The flu causes severe illness especially in children, she added.
“If they don’t seek medical care in time, the virus can be fatal,” Abovyan warned.
Some 209 patients with pneumonia were hospitalized for inpatient care in Armenia as of January 3. 127 of them, around 60 percent, were under the age of 18, she said.
The expert said there were 55 patients, including 47 minors, in the intensive care unit of the hospitals.
