Prosecutors seek forfeiture of former Yerevan mayor's assets
The department of the Armenian Prosecutor General’s Office dealing with confiscation of illegal assets has asked the Anti-Corruption Court to allow the seizure of assets owned by Taron Margaryan, a former Yerevan mayor and an incumbent opposition MP, as well as six persons affiliated with him.
The property to be seized from Margaryan includes six houses in the Avan administrative district of Yerevan, a public area, a villa in the spa down of Jermuk and two vehicles. Their average market value is 1,528,800,500 drams. The prosecutors also want to seize 853,402,782 drams of illicit origin.
Under a law enacted by the Armenian government in 2020, prosecutors can seek asset forfeiture in case of having sufficient grounds to suspect that the market value of an individual’s assets exceeds their “legal income” by at least 50 million drams (around $125,000).
