National Assembly speaker explains why France doesn't recognize Artsakh's independence
France does not recognize the independence of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) adhering to international law, Speaker of the French National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet told a joint news conference with her Armenian counterpart Alen Simonyan in Yerevan on Friday.
"Both the Senate and the National Assembly have passed resolutions condemning Azerbaijan's aggression against Armenia, as well as the blockade of the Lachin corridor,” she said.
“As far as Nagorno-Karabakh is concerned, you know France does not recognize its independence in line with international law, which we are adhering to," the speaker noted.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker called for resumption of dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan within the OSCE Minsk Group format despite Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s claims that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has been resolved and the Minsk Group is “obsolete”.
“I think today it’s important for the parties to re-engage in dialogue. The Minsk Group is one of the existing platforms for dialogue. Of course it’s not the only one, but it is a crucial platform. It’s very important that each member party to that platform agrees to return to dialogue,” Braun-Pivet said.
