Game getting tougher: Political analyst comments on decision to establish EU mission in Armenia
The European Union has officially become one of the mediators or actors in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with all the ensuing great geopolitical implications, political analyst Stepan Danielyan told Pastinfo on Monday, referring to the EU decision to send a new civilian mission to Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan.
The objective of the mission is to “contribute to stability in the border areas of Armenia, build confidence on the ground, and ensure an environment conducive to normalisation efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan supported by the EU”, the European Council said in a statement.
Danielyan highlighted the EU mission as a new “strong presence” in the South Caucasus, saying the “game is getting more complicated”.
Russia was previously the main regional actor with its peacekeepers and a military base in Armenia. Danielyan claims Russia strongly disapproves the deployment of the EU mission, because it was trying to establish a 2+3 format (Russia, Turkey and Iran), while the EU has now become the “fourth party”.
