PACE to debate humanitarian consequences of Lachin blockade on Thursday
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Monday adopted the final agenda of its session, which also includes a debate on the ongoing Azerbaijani blockade of the Lachin corridor, the sole road linking Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to Armenia.
“On Thursday, 26 January, in the afternoon session (from 17h00 to 20h00 Strasbourg time) the current affairs debate “Addressing the humanitarian consequences of the blockade of the Lachin corridor” will be held. This format of the debate does not foresee any document prepared or adopted,” the PACE told Panorama.am on Tuesday.
Azerbaijan has been keeping 120,000 people in Artsakh under siege for 44 days now. Aound 30,000 children, 20,000 elderly people and 9,000 people with disabilities are at risk ofstarvation due to the blockade.
41 kindergartens, 56 pre-schools and 20 all-day schools are shut down in the country because of severe food shortages.
6,828 children cannot attend kindergartens, pre-schools and all-day schools. 117 schools have been closed in Artsakh due to the disruption of electricity and gas supplies since 18 January and nearly 20,000 children are deprived of their right to education.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has facilitated the transfer of 46 severely ill patients from Artsakh to Armenia for urgent treatment since the start of the blockade.
Due to the difficult economic situation, at least 4,700 people have lost their jobs and source of income.
