Why is Armenian society disappointed with Russia?
The Armenian society is disappointed with Russia because after the signing of the trilateral agreement of November 9, 2020, Russia did not act the way Armenia expected, Russian political scientist Alexey Tokarev told a discussion on the impact of the Russia-West confrontation on Armenia held in Yerevan on Saturday.
He said some people in Armenia call it a betrayal, while others consider it under-fulfillment of allied obligations. "This has caused disappointment, regret and even aggression in Armenia. For the public it is also incomprehensible why Russia does not reach out to Armenia when Azerbaijan shells its territory. After all, we are allies and we should stand up for our ally. As far as I understand, these very sentiments are widespread among the Armenian society," the analyst said.
Tokayev says he is aware that many Armenians are enraged by the approaches of his Russian colleagues and politicians on the current developments.
Also, the re-election of the Armenian authorities who lost the war with Azerbaijan in 2020 was “incomprehensible” to him.
"Logically, it was not such a big defeat for the Armenian public, or the leaders are so strong that they won re-election. It is unclear how the defeated leaders won the elections [in 2021]," Tokayev stressed.
