Armenian parliament majority debates motion to allow opposition MP's prosecution
The pro-government majority in the Armenian parliament started debates on motions to allow prosecution of Seyran Ohanyan, a senior MP from the opposition Hayastan bloc and a former defense minister, at a session boycotted by the opposition on Tuesday morning.
Speaker Alen Simonyan agreed to a closed-door debate on one of the motions sought by the ruling Civil Contract faction MPs, citing classified information. He later asked two lawmakers who have not yet been granted access to state secrets to leave the sessions hall
The motions have been submitted by Armenia’s Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan.
The former defense minister stands accused of misuse of office, failure to perform his official duties which led to “grave consequences” and large-scale misappropriation.
Seyran Ohanyan served as Armenia’s defense minister in 2008-2016.
The ruling faction MPs also voted to hold closed debates on the problems facing the Armenian military and urgent measures.
