Serzh Sargsyan questioned in case involving opposition MP, says chief prosecutor
Armenia's third President Serzh Sargsyan has been questioned as part of a case involving Seyran Ohanyan, the parliamentary leader of the main opposition Hayastan alliance and a former defense minister, Armenian Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan told lawmakers on Wednesday.
Ohanyan is accused of embezzlement and a “large-scale waste” of public funds when serving as Armenia’s defense minister from 2008-2016.
"The third president has testified as part of the case. He has been questioned," Vardapetyan said, presenting a second motion to allow the opposition leader’s prosecution.
However, the chief prosecutor noted that there is no clear evidence that the abuses took place under Sargsyan's direct orders. However, Ohanyan wrote on one of the documents that he would "discuss the matter with the president."
The pro-government majority in the Armenian parliament debated the first motion filed by Vardapetyan at a closed-door sitting on Tuesday.
