Opposition MP warns over possible setup of Azeri checkpoint on Armenia-Artsakh road
Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has called attention to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s statements on the Lachin Corridor at a panel discussion with Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Saturday.
“Aliyev reaffirms his approach that the Armenia-Artsakh road and the road to Nakhichevan through Syunik must have the same status, insisting on the setup of checkpoints on those road sections,” the deputy from the Pativ Unem bloc wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
“To put it even more simply, Aliyev says If Armenia refuses to provide a corridor through Syunik, the route linking Armenia to Artsakh must be deprived of a corridor status, which means that when entering Artsakh from Armenia, you have to go through Azerbaijani checkpoints, including security, customs and other procedures.
“It’s quite possible that Azerbaijan initially brought the "Zangezur Corridor" narrative to the foreground to use it as a "compromise" and achieve one of its main goals – to establish a checkpoint on the road connecting Armenia to Artsakh.
“The possible setup of an Azerbaijani checkpoint on the Armenia-Artsakh road would be an epilogue to the Artsakh issue,” Abrahamyan stated.
