Armenian lawyer calls for consistent efforts to force Azerbaijan to implement UN court order
The UN court has set no timeframes for the implementation of its ruling telling Azerbaijan to end the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) roadblock, Armenia's agent before the court, Yeghishe Kirakosyan, said on Monday.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Thursday ordered Azerbaijan to take all measures at its disposal to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.
“This time, the court set no timeframes. The decision says it is binding for the parties immediately after its delivery, i.e. for the country against which the interim measure is applied, which means the latter is obliged to take immediate steps," Kirakosyan told a news conference in Yerevan.
He called for consistent diplomatic and political efforts to force Azerbaijan to implement the UN court order given the absence of an institution enforcing the World Court rulings.
The lawyer highlighted that the foreign ministries of many countries and the UN chief made statements referring to the court decision.
“Armenia should make consistent efforts diplomatically and politically to achieve the execution of The Hague court order,” he stressed.
