Armenian speaker: U.S. can play decisive role in implementation of UN court order to unblock Lachin Corridor
The United States can play a decisive role in the implementation of the UN court ruling that obliges Azerbaijan to end the blockade of the Lachin Corridor, the only road linking Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan told new U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Kristina Kvien at a meeting on Monday.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Thursday ordered Azerbaijan to take all measures at its disposal to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.
In its readout of the meeting, the parliament press office said Simonyan and Kvien touched on the situation in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh in the wake of the Azerbaijani aggression, expressing concern over the humanitarian catastrophe facing the Artsakh Armenians.
“Alen Simonyan highlighted the ruling of the UN International Court of Justice as one of the important steps in this regard. He stressed that the U.S. can play a decisive role in the implementation of the decision,” the statement said.
They also exchanged views on the need to step up international pressure on Azerbaijan, including through the possible use of sanctions.
Simonyan noted that Armenia has no territorial claims against its neighbors, has embarked on the path of democracy and remains committed to the peace agenda.
