1/3 of measles cases have been confirmed in adults in recent years, expert says
Measles is an acute infectious viral disease characterized by high fever, skin rash and cough.
"Though measles is considered a childhood infection, one third of cases have been confirmed in adults in recent years and the disease can be more serious for them than for children," says infectious disease expert Narina Sargsyants, an infectious disease advisor at the Ministry of Healthcare.
According to her, up to 30% of patients may develop complications, including pneumonia, laryngotracheobronchitis, otitis and inflammation of the brain. In rare cases, measles can lead to a fatal brain damage a few years after a person is infected.
According to the expert, measles vaccines have been available for 60 years no. They are safe, efficient and have greatly reduced deaths from measles.
