Armenian opposition moves to ask top court to dismiss judge Seda Safaryan
The largest opposition Hayastan faction in the Armenian parliament has drafted a decision asking the National Assembly to apply to the Constitutional Court to dismiss its judge Seda Safaryan for a gross misconduct, Hayastan secretary Artsvik Minasyan said on Monday.
Safaryan is accused of having illegally worked as a private lawyer after formally taking over as a Constitutional Court judge on December 16 last year.
Speaking at a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs, Minasyan cited Article 164 (Clause 6) of the Constitution which bans judges from doing any other paid work.
“According to the state registry, Ms. Safaryan worked as a private entrepreneur without a break from 1 August 1994 to 27 January 2023," the MP said.
He also cited the law on public service which required Safaryan to end her lawyer's activity within one month after being elected a court justice.
Minasyan said the draft decision on her ouster was based on the studies carried out by lawyers Arsen Babayan and Sos Hakobyan.
