Armenian opposition names candidate for ombudsperson
The two opposition factions in the Armenian parliament have nominated public and political activist Edgar Ghazaryan to become a new ombudsperson.
The position has remained vacant since the resignation of Kristinne Grigoryan in January.
“At a joint meeting, the Pativ Unem and Hayastan factions in the National Assembly have decided to nominate Edgar Ghazaryan as a new human rights defender,” MP Taguhi Tovmasyan, chair of the parliament committee on human rights, wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
Ghazaryan is Armenia’s former ambassador to Poland and a former chief of the Constitutional Court staff.
The ruling Civil Contract faction earlier named Deputy Prosecutor General Anahit Manasyan as its candidate for ombudsperson, but she has not been officially nominated yet.
