Artur Vanetsyan: Azerbaijan, Turkey continue to strengthen their position in South Caucasus
Armenian politician Artur Vanetsyan, the leader of the Homeland Party, has spoken about mounting tensions in the South Caucasus region in an interview to the Iranian newspaper Shargh.
“Azerbaijan and Turkey, taking advantage of the fact that the world is busy with the ongoing developments in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as encouraged by the military success during the 2020 Artsakh war, believe that the Turkish states now have a good opportunity to realize their long-cherished dream of uniting the two countries,” he stated.
Vanetsyan stresses the Aliyev regime tries to solve its problems through military provocations, then Turkey justifies its ally.
“Unfortunately, the Azeri-Turkish tactics are still working, and they continue to further strengthen their position in the South Caucasus,” the politician said.
“In addition to pan-Turkic interests, the Baku regime is pushing for its own agendas. They primarily include the eviction of Armenians from Artsakh and Armenia’s Syunik Province, as well as their annexation. The Azerbaijani authorities perfectly realize that it’s the only way to build a viable state. And while Armenia is weak and, in fact, heavily influenced by foreign interests, including those of Turkey, Azerbaijan is trying to achieve its goal to build a safe future and become self-sufficient as soon as possible through threats and use of force. The Azerbaijani authorities even ignore Iran’s warnings,” he noted.
Speaking about a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Vanetsyan claimed it would not help establish peace in the region.
“The so-called peace treaty is nothing other than another capitulation imposed on Armenia. I hope the time will come when Armenia will really be able to enter an era of peace, but it will be a dignified peace based on the balance of power,” he underscored.
