Yerevan mayor election fails due to lack of quorum
Members of the Yerevan City Council failed to show up for a special sitting on Tuesday to elect a new mayor of the Armenian capital.
The post remained vacant after Hrachya Sargsyan tendered his resignation on March 17.
There was no quorum and First Deputy Mayor Levon Hovhannisyan, who is serving as caretaker mayor, said the sitting failed to start after announcing a 30-minute break.
Earlier, the leader of the My Step faction which controls the Yerevan City Council, Armen Galjyan, said that the faction had not fielded any mayoral candidates and would not take part in the meeting.
Under Armenian law, the City Council must be dissolved and early municipal elections must be held if a new mayor is not elected.
