Armenian parliament allows prosecution of opposition MP
The pro-government majority in Armenia’s parliament has allowed prosecutors to bring criminal charges against MP Mher Sahakyan of the opposition Hayastan faction.
65 MPs from the ruling Civil Contract faction on Wednesday voted to strip Sahakyan of immunity from prosecution sought by Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan.
Sahakyan is accused of assaulting his pro-government colleague Vladimir Vardanyan at a closed meeting of the parliament committee on legal affairs on March 31.
Vardanyan, who represents the ruling Civil Contract party, suffered an eyebrow injury and was treated in hospital following the incident.
The opposition MP was arrested on suspicion of “hooliganism”, but was released three days later. He blamed the brawl on Vardanyan’s “provocative behavior”.
