Armenian opposition MP charged
Armenia’s law-enforcement authorities have brought charges against Mher Sahakyan, an MP representing the main opposition Hayastan faction.
He has been charged with "hooliganism and infliction of minor bodily harm" under Articles 297 and 171 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, Investigative Committee spokesman Gor Abrahamyan told Panorama.am on Monday.
The lawmaker has been banned from leaving the country.
Sahakyan is accused of assaulting his pro-government colleague Vladimir Vardanyan at a closed meeting of the parliament committee on legal affairs on March 31.
Vardanyan, who represents the ruling Civil Contract party, suffered an eyebrow injury and was treated in hospital following the incident.
The opposition MP blamed the brawl on Vardanyan’s “provocative behavior”.
