Political activist challenges legality of new ombudsperson's appointment in court
Political activist Edgar Ghazaryan has challenged the legality of Anahit Manasyan’s election as Armenia’s new ombudsperson in court.
The Armenian parliament voted to appoint Manasyan, a candidate of the ruling Civil Contract party who served as a deputy prosecutor general, as the country’s new human rights defender on April 12.
The opposition Hayastan and Pativ Unem factions rejected her candidacy. They had nominated Edgar Ghazaryan as their own candidate for the vacant post.
In a social media post on Thursday, Ghazaryan said he had asked the Administrative Court to invalidate the parliament decision on Manasyan’s appointment as ombudsperson, citing a number of violations.
The activist claimed her nomination by the ruling party violated the law on prosecutor's office.
