Ombudswoman: Armenian border residents' fundamental rights violated due to armed conflict
Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan on Friday received the delegation headed by the Head of Transversal Challenges and Multilateral Projects Task Force of the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe, Tigran Karapetyan.
In her speech, Manasyan referred to the working visit she made to the Tegh border community of Syunik Province on April 14, 2023, the purpose of which was to get acquainted with the situation on site, and to conduct fact-finding activities, the ombudsperson’s office reported.
“The Defender underlined that as a direct result of the armed conflict, the fundamental and inalienable rights of the residents of the community, such as the rights to life, physical and mental integrity, education, freedom of movement, and property were violated,” it said in a statement.
“The interlocutors referred to the two-phase “Human rights and women in the armed forces in Armenia” project which is being implemented within the framework of cooperation between the Human Rights Defender’s Office and the Council of Europe, highly valuing the work that has been conducted that has contributed to the protection and promotion of human rights in the armed forces, as well as to the development of the capacities of the representatives of Human Rights Defender’s Office,” reads the statement.
Four Armenian troops were killed and six others wounded in an Azerbaijani attack while carrying out engineering work near Tegh on April 11.
