Azerbaijani checkpoint must be removed from Artsakh road, MP insists
Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan insists on the removal of an Azerbaijan checkpoint from the only road linking Artsakh to Armenia, saying the ongoing talks on the checkpoint run counter to the Armenian interests.
Azerbaijani authorities set up a checkpoint at the Hakari Bridge in the Lachin Corridor on Sunday. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said that the checkpoint “will be implemented in interaction with the Russian peacekeeping forces.”
The move is a violation of the November 2020 ceasefire agreement, which says that the Lachin Corridor falls under the control of the Russian peacekeeping troops in Nagorno-Karabakh.
"The problem is crystal-clear: there must not be any checkpoint, and that's it. It is also envisaged in the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020,” Abrahamyan, who represents the opposition Pativ Unem faction, wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
“Discussions on the distribution of roles between Russia and Azerbaijan at the checkpoint and their specific activities are an evil for the Armenian side. There is nothing to negotiate about here.
“There may be room for compromise on other matters, but there must be an uncompromising stance on the checkpoint, because if it starts functioning, it will all be over very quickly,” the MP stated.
