Today is International Dance Day
International Dance Day is a special event created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), UNESCO’s main performing arts partner.
It was established back in 1982 and has been celebrated annually ever since, the Evening Standard reports.
The day is held on April 29, which falls on a Saturday this year. The date was specially selected to coincide with the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, who is considered to be the creator of modern ballet as we know it.
Here is everything you need to know about International Dance Day, including why and how it is celebrated.
Why is World Dance Day celebrated?
The special day is a celebration for those who see the value and importance of dance.
It is also seen as a reminder for governments, politicians and institutions that are yet to recognise the value dance brings to people and nations.
The day is observed by all UN member states across the globe.
How is World Dance Day celebrated?
Each year, on International Dance Day, an outstanding dance personality is selected to write a special message.
The ITI also hold a Gala Celebration, with the guest list including dancers, choreographers, dance students, and dance lovers.
The flagship event in a selected host city sees dance performances, educational workshops, speeches by public figures, and humanitarian projects being highlighted.
This year’s celebration is being held in Shanghai, China and is called “Dance: The Dialogue with Nature, Life and the World”. It is set to include 12 performances from China, New Zealand, and South Korea.
