ICRC suspends transfer of patients from Artsakh to Armenia
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been unable to transfer patients from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to Armenia for over 10 days now after Azerbaijan’s establishment of a checkpoint in the Lachin Corridor on April 23.
ICRC started facilitating the transfer of severely ill Artsakh patients to Armenia’s specialized medical centers after so-called Azerbaijani eco-activists blocked the Lachin Corridor back in December last year.
"In light of the latest developments in the Lachin Corridor, the International Committee of the Red Cross continues dialogue with the decision-makers to clarify its procedures and issues concerning the ICRC mandate so that it can resume the activities carried out since December 19," ICRC Armenia Office Communications Program Manager Zara Amatuni told Panorama.am on Wednesday.
The Red Cross last helped transfer 16 patients from Artsakh to Armenia on April 29.
"After that, there was a need to re-discuss everything through dialogue with all the parties involved, to reach certain agreements anew, and then, as soon as possible, to resume our work and assistance," Amatuni said.
