Armenian MP calls for urgent int'l action against Azerbaijani aggression
MP Taguhi Tovmasyan, chair of the Armenian parliament’s Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs, has sent urgent letters to her international colleagues, calling for sanctions against Baku in response to its fresh military aggression against Armenia.
Four Armenian servicemen were wounded after Azerbaijani forces began shelling Armenian positions near the border village of Sotk early on Thursday. The Armenian army took appropriate defensive and preventive measures in response, the Defense Ministry said, adding the situation in the border area was relatively stable as of 10:45 a.m. local time.
“Back on 15, March 2023, I alarmed the international institutions that movement of a number of Azerbaijani heavy military equipment and personnel along the whole contact line was noticeable. It is even visible for the people of border communities,” Tovmasyan said in a statement.
The lawmaker said she warned of Azerbaijan’s possible military aggression at meetings with the officials of European External Action Service and the European Parliament members during her visit to Brussels on April 25-29.
“Unfortunately, the international institutions in spite of all of their concerns didn’t apply to practical steps to prevent Azerbaijan’s new aggression which leaded to 4 injured from the Armenian side and a situation in which the right to life and other basic human rights of the people living in Armenian border communities and generally the international law has been flagrantly violated,” the MP stressed
“I am urgently addressing all of my international colleagues, alarming that the Azerbaijani armed forces opened artillery and mortar fire at the Armenian positions located near Sotk.
“I have demanded an urgent response, imposing sanctions and holding Azerbaijan accountable for another military aggression against the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia,” she noted.
