Investigator opposed even house arrest for fallen soldier's mother, lawyer says
The investigator dealing with the case of Gayane Hakobyan, the mother of an Armenian soldier killed in the 2020 Artsakh war, opposed all measures of restraint other than arrest against her, including house arrest, her lawyer Ruben Melikyan told reporters on Friday.
The Shengavit District Court of General Jurisdiction in Yerevan completed hearings on a motion for her arrest and is set to deliver a ruling on Saturday.
A group of fallen servicemen’s parents, public activists and politicians gathered outside the court building on Thursday to show support for the woman, who was detained on suspicion of threatening and attempting to kidnap Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s son, Ashot Pashinyan, on Wednesday.
“It was somewhat surprising for us that the issuance of the ruling was scheduled for tomorrow. The judge said that unlike many other cases, he wanted to publish not just the final part, but the entire decision. The court's reasoning is clear, but the decision is undesirable because it means that Ms. Gayane has to spend another day in the detention facility," the lawyer said.
He said they insisted on Hakobyan's release, at the same time asking the court to consider all other measures of restraint, including house arrest, bail and surety.
“The investigator, unfortunately, did not change his position and objected even to house arrest," Melikyan said.
