Protests continue in Yerevan after arrest of fallen soldier's mother
Protests demanding the release of a fallen soldier’s mother in Yerevan entered the third day on Monday.
The anti-government protests erupted after the Shengavit District Court of General Jurisdiction in Yerevan on Saturday approved the pre-trial arrest of Gayane Hakobyan, the mother of soldier Zhora Martirosyan who was killed in the 2020 Artsakh war.
She is accused of attempting to “kidnap” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s son, Ashot Pashinyan. The woman was detained on Wednesday along with three other fallen soldiers’ parents. Law enforcement authorities freed the latter but brought kidnapping charges against Hakobyan.
Several dozen other relatives of soldiers killed in action, who were angered by the court decision, announced a nonstop sit-in outside the Armenian government building on Saturday, demanding her release.
