Protester decries 'unacceptable silence' over arrest of fallen soldier’s mother
No government agency has reacted to the demand of fallen servicemen’s relatives to release Gayane Hakobyan, the mother of soldier Zhora Martirosyan who was killed in the 2020 Artsakh war.
A first instance court in Yerevan sparked anti-government protests on Saturday when it approved the woman’s arrest for one month after she was charged with attempting to “kidnap” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s son, Ashot Pashinyan
Several dozen other relatives of soldiers killed in action announced a nonstop sit-in outside the Armenian government building on Saturday, demanding her release.
"There was not a single attempt to reach out to us to listen to our righteous demand," Zaven Mkrtchyan, the father of fallen sergeant Haykaz Mkrtchyan, told reporters during the protests on Monday.
He urged all to raise their voice against the woman’s “unjustified and disgraceful” arrest. The man also condemned the silence of intellectuals and scientists over it.
“Their silence is unacceptable. They inspired patriotism through their works. Their tolerance towards this injustice is inadmissible,” Mkrtchyan underscored.
