Armenian parliament speaker insists on int'l guarantees for peace deal with Azerbaijan
Speaker of Armenia's National Assembly Alen Simonyan claims international guarantees should be in place after Armenia and Azerbaijan sign a peace deal.
"It’s important that guarantees be put in place after the conclusion of the peace treaty, because we see that almost all terms of the 9 November 2020 statement are somewhat violated and the state [Russia], which acts as the guarantor of the ceasefire, does not react properly," he told reporters on Thursday.
Simonyan claims all those facilitating the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace talks have expressed their readiness to act as guarantors.
“The EU, the U.S. and Russia stand ready to acts as guarantors of the peace treaty, but we have to choose the strongest mechanism,” he noted.
The speaker ruled out a peace treaty with Baku which would not recognize Armenia’s territory of 29,800 square kilometers.
