Armenian customs officers foil drug smuggling attempt
Customs officers at Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport have thwarted an attempt to smuggle over 650 grams of hashish into the country.
In a statement on Monday, the State Revenue Committee (SRC) said its officers found the narcotics after the customs inspection of an Armenian citizen who arrived in Yerevan from Rome.
There was reasonable suspicion that the man, identified by his initials as M.V., had hidden drug packages in his body.
The suspect was taken from Zvartnots Airport to a medical center where a CT scan detected foreign bodies in his stomach and colon. They were removed as a result of various medical interventions.
In total, 110 whole and 16 damaged polyethylene spherical packages containing brown masses similar to hashish with a total weight of 652 grams were removed from the man’s body.
The smuggling case was forwarded to the Armenian Investigative Committee, which opened a criminal probe into the incident.
