Ex-justice minister slams Armen Ashotyan's arrest
Davit Harutyunyan, a former Armenian justice minister and a member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), denounced the Armenian authorities for the arrest of RPA Deputy Chairman Armen Ashotyan, saying it is aimed at silencing him and stopping him from criticizing Nikol Pashinyan’s government.
The Anti-Corruption Court in Yerevan on Friday approved the opposition politician’s arrest for two months. He is charged with abuse of power and money laundering in connection with his chairmanship of the Board of Trustees of the Yerevan State Medical University. Ashotyan strongly denies the charges as “politically motivated”.
Speaking to reporters outside the court building, Harutyunyan claimed Ashotyan knew he could face prosecution, but it did not stop him from “revealing the crimes against Armenia and Artsakh.”
“Hiding the truth behind the bars gives some people the opportunity to continue the realization of their pro-Turkish agenda,” he stated.
“They are deeply mistaken, because there are people whom you can’t silence using such methods. Armen Ashotyan is among those people,” Harutyunyan said, calling the charges against him trumped-up.
