EU concerned over near total blockade of Lachin corridor
The European Union expressed serious concern over the tightening of Azerbaijan’s blockade of the Lachin corridor, the only road connecting Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to Armenia.
Baku has blocked the movement of humanitarian convoys through the Lachin corridor organized by the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Artsakh and the International Committee of the Red Cross since June 15.
"The near total blockage of the Lachin corridor, in place since 15 June is very worrying. It directly threatens the livelihoods of the local population and raises serious fears of a potential humanitarian crisis," Nabila Massrali, the EU foreign policy spokeswoman, said in a statement on Friday.
The EU also deplored growing tensions along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and on the Karabakh line of contact.
"The EU has been closely following growing tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the past few weeks, with daily shooting incidents reported along their international border, in addition to similar incidents on the Karabakh Line of Contact.
"Following the series of recent high-level meetings, the EU continues to be engaged at the highest political level to help defuse these tensions and find mutually acceptable solutions," reads the statement.
