Former Armenian defense minister to appear before parliament war commission
Armenia’s jailed former Defense Minister David Tonoyan has agreed to testify behind closed doors before a parliament commission probing the 2020 Artsakh war.
Earlier in June, Tonoyan ruled out his participation in a commission meeting that would be held behind closed doors, questioning its impartiality.
The ex-minister proposed to hold an open session of the commission jointly with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which was rejected by pro-government MP Andranik Kocharyan, who heads the commission.
“I have decided to appear before the “commission of inquiry” to give explanations and answer its questions,” Tonoyan said in a statement on Wednesday.
He explained that his decision was based on Pashinian's speech at a commission meeting in June and former army chief Onik Gasparyan’s statements after it.
David Tonoyan was arrested in 2021 on fraud and embezzlement charges related to purchases of faulty weaponry and ammunition for Armenia's armed forces.
