Opposition MP says talks with Azerbaijan are about Armenia's 'peaceful surrender'
Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has deplored renewed calls for a mirror withdrawal of troops along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, stressing it would lead to a complete loss of Armenia’s viability.
“Discussions on a mirror withdrawal of troops have intensified amid the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan talks,” he wrote on Facebook on Thursday.
The MP underscored that Azerbaijani forces advanced into Armenian territory in almost all border sections after the 2020 Artsakh war, taking up favorable positons.
“If the Armenian troops pull back a few more kilometers, Armenia will completely lose its viability. Let alone the fact that given its aggressive policy Azerbaijan will use another opportunity to advance further and capture the former deployment areas of the Armenian military,” said Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction.
“The authorities perfectly realize this, but it does not stop them from acting as an initiative in this matter.
“I continue to insist that the negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are not about peace, but about Armenia’s peaceful surrender,” the deputy stressed.
