Opposition MP slams police violence against lawyer
Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has denounced the police for violence against a lawyer in the city of Gyumri.
Human rights activist Karapet Poghosyan claimed to have been assaulted by an officer from the police station in the city’s Mush district on Sunday.
The incident occurred at a local shop and was caught on camera, he said.
“Why does a policeman dare to attack a citizen in broad daylight? Simply because he knows he won’t face any punishment for it,” Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, wrote on Facebook on Monday.
“Instead of maintaining public safety, the police have taken on the opposite role, blatantly violating the public order and using violence against people,” he stated.
Earlier in June, lawyer Karen Alaverdyan was assaulted and detained while trying to stop police officers from kicking and punching his client at the police headquarters of Yerevan’s Kentron district.
Two other lawyers claimed to have been ill-treated at a Yerevan police station in February while representing their client. None of the officers accused of beating up the lawyers have been sacked.
