Armenian parliament majority seeks ouster of human rights committee chair
The pro-government majority in the Armenian parliament seeks the ouster of independent MP Taguhi Tovmasyan as chairperson of the Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs.
The decision drafted by the ruling Civil Contract faction has been posted on the parliament website. The main speaker will be Civil Contract MP Hovik Aghazaryan.
The document argues that Tovmasyan attended only 8 out of 46 meetings of the National Assembly Council, thus “failing to fulfill her duties as the committee chair” and to coordinate the committee activities with the parliament leadership.
The draft decision is yet to be put on the agenda of the upcoming parliament session.
Aghazaryan announced his intention to initiate a no-confidence vote in Tovmasyan after she staged a protest in the parliament in late April.
ArmLur.am claims the decision is related to an altercation that took place during the human rights committee debates on the opposition candidate for ombudsperson. Tovmasyan was then accused of failing to call a break and demand an apology from the candidate, Edgar Ghazaryan, for saying that an "Azeri-Turkish revolution" took place in Armenia in 2018.
