Armenian parliament majority debates ouster of senior opposition MP
The pro-government majority in the Armenian parliament held debates on a draft decision to oust opposition MP Taguhi Tovmasyan as the chairwoman of the parliament’s human rights committee at a special sitting on Tuesday.
The ruling Civil Contract party on Monday moved to strip Tovmasyan of the parliament post, accusing her of failure to fulfill her duties.
Presenting the draft decision, Civil Contract MP Hovik Aghazaryan said Tovmasyan failed to show up for 36 out of 46 meetings of the National Assembly Council, thus disrupting its activities.
The MP said the ruing faction would not nominate a candidate to replace Tovmasyan and would discuss any opposition candidate for the post.
The parliament majority began a secret voting on the draft decision.
In a statement earlier on Tuesday, Tovmasyan rejected the accusations and accused Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of personally ordering her dismissal in retaliation for her decision to leave his political team in 2020.
