Role of EU mission in Armenia should be clarified, MP says
MP Tigran Abrahamyan of the opposition Pativ Unem faction called for clarifying the real role of the EU’s civilian monitoring mission in Armenia and its political repercussions after EU patrols came under Azerbaijani fire on Tuesday.
Armenia’s Defense Ministry reported that gunfire from Azerbaijani positions targeted the EU observers patrolling close to the border village of Verin Shorzha and their vehicle.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Abrahamyan stressed the deployment of the EU mission along Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan was expected to prevent possible Azerbaijani aggression.
"Azerbaijan has now provoked ceasefire violations even in the presence of EU observers or targeting them. This cannot be an accident because information about the EU patrol schedule is also passed on to Azerbaijan,” he wrote.
“It’s time to clarify the real role of the EU monitoring mission and the political implications of its activity. Roughly speaking, it is necessary to understand what the EU mission gives to Armenia from the military or political point of view,” the MP added.
