Armenia applies to ECHR over reservist detained by Azerbaijani soldiers
Armenia has applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), requesting an interim measure against Azerbaijani following the capture of an Armenian army reservist on Wednesday, the spokesperson of Armenia's representative for international legal matters, Hasmik Samvelyan, told the media on Thursday.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said the reservist was a member of a commando unit that allegedly attempted to infiltrate into Azerbaijani territory on Wednesday morning, adding he was wounded and detained by Azerbaijani forces in the Kelbajar region.
The Armenian Defense Ministry strongly denied the report as an “absolute lie.” It initially said that according to preliminary data, an Armenian reservist enrolled in military training assemblies had left his combat post.
Later the ministry confirmed that the Armenian reservist was detained by Azerbaijani servicemen. It released a video showing a group of Azerbaijani servicemen approaching and talking to the Armenian man, who appeared in Azerbaijani territory under yet unclear circumstances, before apprehending and taking him to an unknown direction on a truck.
“This video disproves the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry’s false claims of an attempted subversive attack by an Armenian army unit,” it said.
