Shots fired at Syunik airport from Azerbaijani territory
An unidentified man fired shots overnight from the territory of Azerbaijan at an Armenian airport in Kapan, a town in Armenia’s Syunik Province bordering Azerbaijan, the country’s National Security Service (NSS) said on Friday.
The NSS said the incident in which the unknown person approached the Syunik airport, fired three shots and left occurred at 4:24 a.m. The windows and the roof of the airport were damaged in the shooting.
“We call on the Azerbaijani authorities to conduct a proper investigation into the incident and to take measures to exclude the recurrence of such incidents,” the NSS said in a statement.
“The Border Guard troops of the Republic of Armenia NSS are ready for a joint probe and/or a transfer of relevant videos to Azerbaijan,” it added.
The shooting came hours after a plane carrying Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan landed in Kapan on Thursday. Regular flights from Yerevan to Kapan are expected to start next week.
