MP: Azeri forces have long been meddling in Armenia's internal affairs
Azerbaijani forces have long been stationed in Armenia’s sovereign territory, meddling in the country’s internal affairs, opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan stated on Saturday.
His comments came after an unidentified person fired shots from the territory of Azerbaijan at an airport in Kapan, a town in Armenia’s Syunik Province, in the early hours of Friday. The shooting came hours after a plane carrying Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan landed in Kapan on Thursday. Regular flights from Yerevan to Kapan are expected to start next week.
In a social media post, Abrahamyan said that the head of the Azerbaijani parliament’s Defense, Security and Anti-Corruption Committee had confirmed that the shooting “was no accident and was a warning against regular passenger flights from Yerevan to Kapan."
“After the 44-day war, Azerbaijan has banned the Armenian authorities from exploiting the Sotk mine and constructing a smelting plant in Yeraskh. Now they oppose the operation of the Kapan airport,” said Abrahamyan, who represents the opposition Pativ Unem faction.
“Pashinyan's statement that he is the prime minister of the Republic of Armenia and is responsible for it is an absolute lie. Azerbaijani troops have long been in Armenia’s sovereign territory. Moreover, they have been interfering in the country’s internal affairs, influencing its statements, economy and security issues," the MP stated.
