Artists' Union opens exhibition to mark Tigran Tokmajyan's anniversary
The Artists’ Union of Armenia launched a solo exhibition on Wednesday to mark the 100th anniversary of prominent Soviet Armenian artist Tigran Tokmajyan, whose landscapes, figurative paintings and frescoes hold a special place in the Armenian fine arts of the 20th century.
It is the third exhibition organized by the Artists’ Union to mark a painter’s 100th birth anniversary this year. The union deputy head, Levon Abrahamyan, hailed them as humble artists and true devotees of the homeland. He expressed regret that Tokmajyan’s artworks did not enjoy much popularity.
"Tigran Tokmajian has done a great job. I deeply regret that Armenian society knows very little about such an artist,” he said.
Speaking to Panorama.am, the artist’s daughter, Arpine Tokmajyan, who is the exhibition curator, said that her father's last solo exhibition was held 20 years ago. Three solo exhibitions were organized during the artist's lifetime, she said.
"My father was a modest man, his works were not covered by the media, he had no albums. So, I considered it my duty to organize such an exhibition, which would create a complete picture of Tigran Tokmajyan as an artist and present his legacy,” she said.
The Yerevan exhibition runs through August 29. An exhibition honoring the artist will be held in his hometown, Gyumri, on September 2-12.
