Expert warns of 'large-scale' attack on Armenia
Azerbaijan and Turkey may be planning a “large scale” attack on Armenia, Varuzhan Geghamyan, an expert on the Middle East and the South Caucasus, has warned.
"It is highly likely that Azerbaijan and Turkey will start a full-scale war against the Republic of Armenia in the coming days," he said in a social media post on Tuesday.
Geghamyan pointed to the ongoing massive Azerbaijani military buildup along the border with Armenia near Vayots Dzor, Gegharkunik and Syunik Provinces, daily cross-border shootings, the aggressive rhetoric of the Turkish and Azeri leadership, as well as the call-ups of reservists in Azerbaijan.
“This time, the offensive would also include strikes from Nakhichevan targeting the area from Yeraskh to the southern borders of Syunik. Obviously, the enemy is actively preparing for it,” the expert wrote, adding Turkey could be directly involved in military operations.
“In the event of an attack, Turkish and Azerbaijani troops would be tasked not only with creating mass panic in Armenia and pushing for its unconditional surrender (which the pro-Turkish leaders of Armenia are waiting for to make all the necessary new concessions), but also cutting off Armenia’s north from its south,” Geghamyan stated.
“It goes without saying that Armenia’s authorities have neither the capacity nor desire to counter this threat. If the plan succeeds, the Armenian state will, in fact, cease to exist,” he said, insisting on the removal of the current Armenian government to stop it.
