Opposition MP again slams Armen Ashotyan's arrest
Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has again blasted the Armenian authorities for the arrest of Armen Ashotyan, an opposition politician highly critical of Nikol Pashinyan’s government.
Ashotyan, deputy head of the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), was arrested on 16 June on charges of abuse of power and money laundering strongly denied by him as politically motivated. Yerevan’s Anti-Corruption Court extended his pre-trial arrest for two months on 15 August.
“RPA Deputy Chairman Armen Ashotyan has been in prison for three months now,” Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, wrote on Facebook on Saturday, adding he continues to expose the authorities' “crimes despite enduring all kinds of hardships” in the Nubarashen Penitentiary.
The lawmaker accused Pashinyan and his team of “despicable acts” against their own people and readiness to make "every concession to the enemy".
“Freedom to Armen Ashotyan, freedom to all political prisoners!” he added.
