Opposition says Yerevan elections confirm 'lack of public trust' in Pashinyan's team
The outcome of Sunday’s municipal elections in Yerevan has confirmed that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party “does not enjoy public trust”, claims oppositionist Andranik Tevanyan, whose Mother Armenia bloc has won seats in the Yerevan City Council.
The ruling party garnered 32.57% of the vote, felling short of an absolute majority in the municipal council which is empowered to appoint the next mayor.
The Mother Armenia alliance won 15.43% of the vote and entered the municipal council along with three other parties.
In a live video on social media on Monday, Tevanyan stated the election results “dealt a heavy blow” to the Armenian authorities.
“Nikol Pashinyan and his team failed to get what they wanted,” he said, hailing the election outcome as the “first step towards change of power” in Armenia.
“It’s pretty clear that the current authorities lack public trust and legitimacy. We believe that there is an opportunity to turn this process into a general struggle for power change. Stand ready!” the oppositionist added.
