Armenian ombudsperson: Azerbaijan grossly violates principles of international law
Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan urged the international community to take immediate measures to protect the rights of the Artsakh Armenians amid a full-scale Azerbaijani attack. Below is the full text of her statement published by the ombudsperson’s office.
"The military aggression unleashed by the armed forces of Azerbaijan against Stepanakert and other civilian settlements distorts all the values underlying the modern human rights protection system. The Human Rights Defender Ms. Anahit Manasyan calls on international organizations and actors with a mandate to protect human rights to take immediate steps.
According to open sources, the Azerbaijani armed forces are using various large-caliber weapons against the civilian population, including artillery. In this regard, alerts were also received in the Human Rights Defender’s office.
The Defender especially emphasizes that the aggressive behavior of the armed forces of Azerbaijan grossly violates the principles of international law, poses a real threat to the right to life and security of the civilian population, as well as other fundamental rights. The Defender reminds once again that no political and territorial circumstances can prevail the protection of human rights.
Human rights must be paramount in all situations and in every corner of the world. The Defender calls on the entire human rights community to unite around the realization of this goal and prevent the distortion of the modern human rights system."
