'This is happening in a CoE member country in the 21st century'
Edgar Ghazaryan, an Armenian academic, diplomat, public and political activist, has offered some analysis of the current developments in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).
“Mass funerals are being held in Stepanakert and other parts of Artsakh nowadays. There are even no statistics available on the number of casualties. People are being laid to rest in the lands handed over to the enemy,” he told a news conference in Yerevan on Monday.
“Do you understand what is happening? Hunger-stricken people bury the bodies of their loved ones and on the same day they arrive in Goris on a bus to somewhat feed their children. And this is happening in a Council of Europe member country in the 21st century.
“They were constantly talking about Europe… Europe is busy protecting a person's sexual orientation rights. A massacre is taking place in two CoE member states… Now it doesn't matter whether the territory of Artsakh is disputed or whether it is part of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan is also a member of the Council of Europe.
“It turns out that in a member country of the Council of Europe, you can keep people starving for months, and then send vehicles carrying hunger-stricken people or dead bodies here and there. How can this happen in a European country? Such a thing has never happened not only in the history of the Armenian people, but also in the history of the world.
“Now, you know, it has become something common for us. They say, “according to the Artsakh ombudsman, 200 people were killed and 400 others were injured." They laid down their arms, then the enemy entered this village and... Just imagine, 20 Azerbaijani soldiers enter an Armenian village, 2 out of 20 saw their brothers or fathers killed in the previous wars. This man says, "I am now taking my brother’s revenge” and kills everyone, including women and children, there. Who is going to hold him to account? This is what is happening in Artsakh now,” Ghazaryan said.
