Opposition bloc calls for fresh Yerevan elections
The opposition Mother Armenia alliance has called for fresh Yerevan municipal elections amid a possible lack of consensus between the opposition forces to team up and appoint the new Yerevan mayor.
According to the results of the September 17 elections, the National Progress party led by former Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan, the Mother Armenia bloc led by former opposition MP Andranik Tevanyan and the Public Voice party of U.S.-based blogger Vartan Ghukasyan will control a combined 33 seats in the 65-member municipal council empowered to appoint the next mayor of the Armenian capital.
Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party gained 24 seats, while the Republic Party won 8 seats in the municipal assembly. The first meeting of the City Council is scheduled for October 10.
In a statement on Thursday, Mother Armenia reiterated its commitment to a change of power in Armenia and urged the two other opposition groups to make “unambiguous statements that woud not give rise to different interpretations”.
“In case there is no consensus, the only solution in the current situation will remain the conduct of new elections to the Yerevan City Council by failure to attend the meeting and ensure quorum," reads the statement.
